For 30 years, Community Shares has been a strong supporter of nonprofits focusing on Social Justice, Animal Welfare and the Environment. Over the coming months, we will be sharing 30 stories from our 30 years of community change.
Imagine you’re a mother with little education, but you dream of earning your GED and being the best role model for your children. Who would you turn to for help?
Marie Kelly said Milwaukee Achiever gave her the confidence she needed to pass her GED after being laid-off from her job of almost 11 years. Her greatest challenge was the math test.
“To me, math was like studying a second language,” said Kelly.
Kelly failed the test twice and became very discouraged until the Milwaukee Achiever staff encouraged her and pushed her to improve. She is now happy to say that she finally has her GED.
A group of adult learners show their gratitude for Milwaukee Achiever in an appreciation video:
Kelly’s guide, Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services, provides education, life skills training and workforce development to adult learners through its tutoring programs. Today, one in every five Milwaukee residents is considered functionally illiterate. Since 1983, Milwaukee Achiever has successfully served over 18,000 adults.
