Community Shares 30 Years 30 Stories

For 30 years, Community Shares has been a strong supporter of nonprofits focusing on Social Justice, Animal Welfare and the Environment. Over the coming months, we will be sharing 30 stories from our 30 years of community change.

Enjoy Local Rivers

Have you ever found yourself enjoying some of the beautiful Milwaukee, Menomonee or Kinnickinnic River watersheds? They haven’t always been beautiful, but Milwaukee Riverkeeper has been working to improve the quality. Paul Schwartzkopf, outreach coordinator at Milwaukee Riverkeeper, said he’s seen improvement in the river in a variety of ways, but most importantly, he said people are really wanting to use it.

“It used to be a dumping ground,” Schwartzkopft said. “People’s perceptions of the river is starting to change. Buildings are now being built to face the river instead of away from it.”

Milwaukee Riverkeeper has a mission to protect water quality and wildlife habitat in the river corridors and to advocate for sound land use in the river watersheds. It also does hands-on river restoration projects as well as organizes roughly 3,000 volunteers each year in river cleanup activities. This year’s river cleanup involved cleaning 49 sites. In one two-mile stretch of the Kinnickinnic River, volunteers cleared three 30 gallon dumpsters, 50 garbage bags of debris and about 5,000 bottles.
