For 30 years, Community Shares has been a strong supporter of nonprofits focusing on Social Justice, Animal Welfare and the Environment. Over the coming months, we will be sharing 30 stories from our 30 years of community change.
Valeria Gonzalez, a student volunteer and board member at Voces de la Frontera, listened as a high school student shared his story at a Voces Conference. There, she admitted he was an undocumented immigrant who dreamed of going to college. However, his parents told him he didn’t have the same opportunities as others. Disappointed, the young man discovered Voces de la Frontera, began attending meetings and found the motivation needed to pursue her dreams.
Listen to Valeria recall her story on 88Nine RadioMilwaukee, a local radio station dedicated to reaching a new generation of radio with the most entertaining and adventurous selection of music and public affairs programming. It celebrates diversity and encourages community engagement while promoting a positive global identity for Milwaukee.
The source of the young man’s motivation, Voces de la Frontera, is Wisconsin’s leading immigrant rights group. Voces de la Frontera organizes for low-income and immigrant worker rights and is recognized as a statewide leader for immigration reform that respects civil and worker rights.
