Growing Green with Groundwork Milwaukee

Have you noticed some of the beautiful gardens popping up in the community? Groundwork Milwaukee and its volunteers can partially be thanked for that. In 2011, the Groundwork Milwaukee Green Team worked with six different community garden groups to build 41 raised beds. They built 12 raised beds with the Midtown Neighborhood Block Watch, 14 beds for the community garden at the Grow and Play Lot, 10 beds for a community garden at the Solomon Community Temple and 5 raised beds for a community garden with the Kinnickinnic River Improvement Coalition (KRIC).

The projects brought neighborhood families together, provided food for the neighborhoods and taught skills to the Green Team. The students gained carpentry experience and learned how to find resources such as soil and lumber.

Groundwork Milwaukee, focuses on improving the environment in Milwaukee through project development services. Groundwork Milwaukee’s Green Team is a youth employment and volunteer program engaging local high school students in community based environmental projects. These inner city teens develop job and leadership skills from working on environmental projects that aim to improve the community.
