For 30 years, Community Shares has been a strong supporter of nonprofits focusing on Social Justice, Animal Welfare and the Environment. Over the coming months, we will be sharing 30 stories from our 30 years of community change.
Struggling with basic math concepts, letter recognition and controlling his behavior, second grader Miguel sought help from the Shining Stars youth education program. Miguel attended the Shining Stars program after school nearly every day for over three years. The staff and tutors helped him improve his understanding of mathematics and become an independent reader who enjoys reporting back on his latest book. Miguel gained confidence in himself and his academic abilities, dramatically improving his behavior and allowing his sharp wit to shine through in his everyday demeanor.

The Shining Stars youth education program was created by Hope House of Milwaukee, a community center located in the Walker’s Point neighborhood. The program offers educational and recreational activities to youth living in the shelters as well as youth living around the Hope House neighborhood.
