For 30 years, Community Shares has been a strong supporter of nonprofits focusing on Social Justice, Animal Welfare and the Environment. Over the coming months, we will be sharing 30 stories from our 30 years of community change.

Journey House - Meet the Need

Have you ever considered what it would be like to be in a place where you don’t speak the primary language? Cherise Myers, development director of Journey House, shares a story on 88Nine RadioMilwaukee of how the organization helped a woman learn English through the English Learners Class (ELC).

Motivated by an emergency in which her daughter was in danger and the woman could not understand emergency workers, the woman sought help. Since then, she got a new job, allowing her to provide a stable home for her family.

Listen to the Cherise's story on 88Nine RadioMilwaukee.

Journey House has been a member of Community Shares since the very beginning in 1981.  The partnership evolved from a strong focus from both organizations on building a healthier community. In 1969, Journey House started as an agency helping youth stay off the streets but over the years evolved to provide education services for people of all ages and families. Today, Journey House educates individuals with a focus on reducing unemployment and crime, strengthening families and  revitalizing the community. Last year, it served 4,000 adults and youth.
