For 30 years, Community Shares has been a strong supporter of nonprofits focusing on Social Justice, Animal Welfare and the Environment. Over the coming months, we will be sharing 30 stories from our 30 years of community change.

Protecting the Parks

Did you know that there are close to 50 state parks, over 40 state trails, 12 state forests and 6 recreation areas in Wisconsin?

Friends of Wisconsin State Parks is a nonprofit organization made up of a Board of Directors, over 75 local friends groups and general members from across the state that helps preserve, protect and maintain the natural beauty of Wisconsin’s state parks, trails, forests and recreation areas. The organization works with all of the local friends groups and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to form a strong network dedicated to preservation of our state’s parks.

Each year, Friends of Wisconsin State Parks conducts a season-long online survey asking park users to rank the best state park features. Then, it tabulates the results and holds the Gold Seal Awards to present the winners. The 2011 winners are:

  • Best Building Restoration or Update: Heritage Hill State Park –  Joseph Cotton House
  • Best Ice Fishing: Mirror Lake State Park
  • Best Fall Colors: Stower Seven Lakes Trail
  • Best Place for Quiet Reflection and Meditation: Newport State Park
  • Best Pet Area: Governor Dodge State Park
  • Best Walk-In Camp Site: Rock Island State Park
  • Best Park on the Ice Age Trail: Interstate Park
  • Best Bridge or Tunnel Feature: Badger State Trail
  • Most Unique or Non-Traditional Trail: Rib Mountain State Park
  • Best Display of Native Wisconsin Plants: Lake Wissota State Park

So, if you’re looking to spend a crisp fall day at one of Wisconsin’s beautiful state parks, take park visitors’ advice and visit Stower Seven Lakes Trail to see wonderful fall colors.
