Community Shares 30 Years 30 Stories

For 30 years, Community Shares has been a strong supporter of nonprofits focusing on Social Justice, Animal Welfare and the Environment. Over the coming months, we will be sharing 30 stories from our 30 years of community change.

The Wisconsin Humane Society Helps Kids Build Empathy and Kindness

The Wisconsin Humane Society developed People and Animals Learning (PAL), a nationally recognized empathy-building program, in response to an increasing number of violent acts committed against animals by youth. PAL teaches at-risk youth the importance and value of respect for animals and, in turn, respect for their peers and their community.

Teachers and social workers nominate underserved, at-risk Milwaukee area youth ages 10-13 to participate in PAL. Under the supervision of WHS education experts, participants work in teams of two to train a shelter dog to become a well-mannered companion for an adopting family. Participants also learn to socialize cats and care for orphaned wildlife. Together, children learn compassion, cooperation, accountability and the importance of achieving goals with positive action rather than aggression.

PAL participants do more than take care of animals.  They become ambassadors for responsible animal care.  The PAL kids share with others – including their peers and family members– the need to prevent cruelty and the neglect of animals. Their learning and the messages they share help to create a safer, more humane community for both people and animals.
